Background Study

Solid waste is essentially garbage: waste produced in our homes, businesses and some industrial sources. Solid waste production in this country and around the globe are growing in volume and in toxicity. Unclassified and unsorted solid waste mostly end up in the landfill, which poisons the environment and impacts public health. There are numerous solid waste facilities, including landfills, incinerators, and a growing number of transfer stations. Many of the older facilities run by municipalities have been reaching its end of life, and some have been shut down because of environmental concerns, paving the way for the waste industry to market their “state-of-the-art” solutions and facilities.

Problem

A typical process of waste treatment can be divided in three separated processes: Collection, Transportation and Treatment. Each process faces its own problems and impacts the next process behind.
